Description (Abstract)

During my spring 2026 internship I worked with Professor Rosa Berland at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, CUNY for the organization and curating of the multimedia art exhibit -New Practices in Italian American and Italian Diasporic Contemporary art exhibit. Most people don’t realize what goes into creating an art show. Research included learning about concepts for exhibits,  the call for artists, soliciting information from the artists including biography and artwork vision and meaning, selection and planning, implementing organizational systems for submissions, layout, didactic text, asset management, loan negotiation, logistical collaboration with participating artists, shipping and receiving the artworks, and confirming the works arrived in pristine conditions and final layout.  As it is my career goal to enter museum work, this practical hands-on research has given me knowledge and is a first step in adding more future experiences to come. My presentation will showcase the research and logistical process for organizing art exhibitions.
