Description (Abstract)
This presentation explores how secondary social studies teachers can intentionally design “brave spaces” that allow students to engage with controversial topics through structure, purpose, and evidence-based discussion. Drawing from real classroom experience, it offers practical strategies for establishing norms, facilitating difficult conversations, and responding to challenging student comments without losing control of the room. Participants will leave with concrete tools and language to confidently teach complex and sensitive issues while preparing students for civic discourse.
