Description (Abstract)

A study by Kang and Colleagues (2025) found that music enhances the feelings we are already experiencing. Furthermore, A study by Miranda and colleagues (2019) found that musical ethnocultural identity may promote greater happiness by building stronger collective self-esteem in late adolescence. I will recruit 50-100 students across four undergraduate psychology classes to test the impact of music and task type (divergent vs. convergent) on task satisfaction. I will utilize a sample creativity task from the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (Torrance, E.P., 1966) and simple math questions for the divergent and convergent conditions, respectively. For the music condition, I will use a top-charting pop song; the other condition will complete the task in silence. Data collection is in progress, and results are expected by early April. The study aims to further research regarding the impacts music and creativity may have on academic, social, or emotional satisfaction.
