Description (Abstract)
Engaging in social interactions amongst intergenerational groups may contribute to positive stimulation in cognitive aging and enhancing social abilities for both age groups (Burn et al., 2015). Moreover, understanding intergenerational bonding and family systems is ultimately beneficial to these groups in developing their language and emotional skills (Stelle et al., 2010). This study explores how language and cultural contexts in older adults, not born or raised in the United States, influence their ability to communicate and engage with college-age adults. By documenting interactions between grandparents and grandchildren in such multigenerational and multilingual families, we can begin to understand this process.. We ask, how do cultural, linguistic and generational differences impact communication? This study will consist of grandparent and grandchild pairs engaging in a structured conversation and a 30-minute semi-structured interview with the college-age grandchild. Results of this study will inform the family systems and communication for multicultural and intergenerational families.
