The Secret to Reading Workshop

Biography

My name is Elisabeth Perlegis. I graduated Molloy University with a Masters of Science Dual Degree in Childhood (Birth-6th Grade) and Special Education (K-12th grade) with a concentration in English. I am currently a first grade general education teacher, who has spent her years as a teacher researching ways to instill the science of reading within the classroom and through school-home connections. My interests include reading, drawing and writing. Teaching has always held a special place in my heart ever since I was young, inspiring me to pursue a career where I can make a meaningful difference. I believe that teaching must come from the heart, as genuine care and connection foster the best learning experiences. Inspired by my students, I embrace the mission of spreading self-love and kindness. I recently became a children's book author, writing the book, Lexi The Llama Has A Hair Probllama. This book reflects my heartfelt belief that young readers should love themselves, for when their hearts shine bright, it radiates both inside and out,

My contact information is perlegis@aol.com. My area of focus for this workshop is literacy.

Description (Abstract)

Abstract

This presentation "The Secret to Reading" Workshop equips educators with a research‑grounded understanding of the science of reading and practical, evidence‑based strategies to accelerate literacy development. It synthesizes current cognitive and instructional research into clear principles—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—and demonstrates how systematic, explicit instruction in these areas produces measurable gains for diverse learners. Participants will examine classroom routines, assessment tools, and intervention models that translate theory into everyday practice, plus family‑friendly resources and guidance to strengthen home‑school partnerships. Through case examples, lesson‑level routines, and easily implementable materials, attendees leave with a coherent instructional framework, ready‑to‑use strategies, and curated resources to support teachers and parents in closing literacy gaps and fostering confident, competent readers.
