This book was written by Mary A. Livermore, who served as a nurse in the Union Army and in relief work at home, in hospitals, camps, and at the front, during the American Civil War. It contains anecdotes, pathetic incidents, and thrilling reminiscence portraying the positives and negatives of hospital life and the sanitary services of the war. The book is superbly illustrated for its time with portraits and many full-page engraving on steel and fine chromo-lithograph plates. It was published by A. D. Worthington and Company located in Hartford, Connecticut.
