Abstract

The importance of developing a therapeutic relationship has been emphasized in the field of music therapy. In order to examine the process of building between a music therapist and a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder during an improvisational music therapy session, this study utilized the microanalysis method to explore both musical and non-musical responses of the therapist and the child in a five-minute excerpt of a music therapy session at the Rebecca Center for Music Therapy. The results indicated that specific qualities of improvisational music, such as repetition and changes provide opportunities for the therapist and the client to connect and build therapeutic relationship.
