Abstract

This phenomenological study aimed to analyze the experiences of Nordoff-Robbins level one trainees in the United States amid significant platform shifts as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection consisted of semi-structured virtual interviews that primarily focused on the experiences of trainees as students/supervisees and as providers of music-centered music therapy services. Emergent themes included (1) Shared Musical Space When Not Physically Together, (2) The Impact of Virtual Platforms on the Experience of Musical Aesthetic, (3) The Nordoff-Robbins Trainee’s Relationship with the Musical Self, and (4) Growth Resulting from Unforeseen Change. Findings reveal that interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics, central to the individual’s experience of their lifeworld -- and intermusical and intramusical dynamics, central to the individual’s experience of their musical lifeworld -- are all interconnected and relevant to the Nordoff-Robbins trainee’s development as a music-centered music therapist.
